"Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory."
I really didn't expect to gain so many takeaways from a Jim Carrey speech. That's not to say I don't value Jim Carrey. I acknowledge and appreciate his depth, intelligence and creativity. I just, I wasn't expecting how profoundly poetic and simple his delivery would be. Raw and honest truths laced with humility and comic relief (and art). Find yourself 20 minutes this week to sit down and take notes. Or read the transcript here.

I think polenta is underrated. The grain is versatile and a great vehicle for other flavors and ingredients. Check out this recipe for oven baked polenta with roasted mushrooms and thyme (s/o Leah). It's simple and makes for good leftovers.

I recently started teaching myself how to play the piano again, or should I say pianoforte, the original name of the instrument because it could be played softly (piano) and loudly (forte). The piano was invented in 1709 in Italy and there are over 12,000 parts. I am one of 18 million non-professional piano players in the United States. Pretty cool! Learn more interesting facts about the piano here.

I'm pretty confident that I've enjoyed every song I've heard from Leven Kali. And it was no different with his most recent release, "NunWrong." Really nice harmonies over a very smooth and groovy melody. Enjoy it.

If you haven't watched "Minding the Gap," a film by Bing Liu, available on Hulu, I suggest you do. (As was suggested to me by Leyla.) And after you watch it, read up on the filmmaker. To get you started with that, here's an interview with Liu in the Chicago Tribune. Liu is smart, thoughtful, intentional, and a really good filmmaker. He took 12 years of skateboard footage and turned it into a beautiful documentary spotlighting a small city in the Midwest and the toll of abuse. (If you want to keep reading, here's another good piece on Liu and "Minding the Gap" in Filmmaker magazine.)
