Tuesdays with Morrie

“I give myself a good cry if I need it, but then I concentrate on all good things still in my life.” - Morrie Schwartz
― Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie

I love a good cry. I might even cry too much - I cry when I’m sad, when I laugh, when I’m dehydrated. I think it’s because I didn’t cry much as a kid. I tried to keep it in. To be strong. To remain unbothered, rather, unaffected, by circumstances and experiences. With age, with life and love and loss, I’ve learned the importance of a good cry. And was reminded by this as I picked up Mitch Albom’s memoir, Tuesdays with Morrie. I’m a firm believer that you books find you at the right time. And while I can’t believe I put off this book as long as I did, I’m confident that I’m reading it now at the very right time.

Be kind to yourselves today. Cry if you need to. Then concentrate on all the good things in your life.

I think everyone should learn how to bake bread. A French loaf is a simple recipe, four ingredients. The key to good bread is patience and attention.  Check out this recipe from Jeff Hertzberg M.D. & Zoë François' book, The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day (s/o Leah), and set some time aside this week to give it a shot.

Art I Like
Cy Twombly is a hit or miss. His work is messy and confusing. His work challenges what art is. I like Twombly's work. It's open to interpretation. It gives space for you to experience the art in your own unique way.

A Song I Like

HONNE and Anna of the North connected on a new single, "Feels So Good," and it's sooo good. I've been diggin' it while I enjoy a cup of tea and breakfast.
LOL
What do you call sad coffee? Despresso.
#FACTS
I'm all about houseplants. From helping to improve air quality by reducing carbon dioxide and airborne dust levels to deterring illness and boosting healing, house plants have a variety of benefits in addition to looking very pretty. One of my favorite houseplants is pothos. It's low maintenance and once you have one, you can propagate it super easily.
Another Song I Like

Just a reminder that Where I Wanna Be by Donell Jones is one of the best R&B albums, and also, unfortunately, underappreciated. Spin it this week. Sing out loud. Put "This Luv" on repeat.
From a Friend
My friend Leyla is in law school and from her stories sounds like equal parts cool and horrifying. One cool thing about it is that I'm learning a lot more about US law than I ever thought I would. And one resource she recently put me onto is the podcast More Perfect. More Perfect breaks down supreme court decisions and explains what the rulings mean for us. Give it a listen. You'll be a more informed citizen and that's cool.

(Oh, and while you're at it,
register to vote, because voting is cool, too.
One Last Thing
Nature is the best teacher. I'm sure at one point or another you've heard that quote, "advice from a tree: stay grounded, connect with your roots, drink plenty of water, go out on a limb." Well that's kind of a simplified definition of biomimicry. Biomimicry is the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes. Innovation learned through the tried and true patterns in nature. Check out conservationist Janine Benyus' definition and why it's important
