I know I've written about Mr. Rogers before and here I am doing it again because the world feels heavier lately, I'm sick of Covid and everything else I write is kinda sad.

Mr. Rogers taught a generation that everyone has inherent value. That everyone is special. He created a space that allowed children to be vulnerable, to be accepted and to feel openly and expressively. “I like you as you are,” Rogers reiterated time and time again. What a kind and thoughtful reminder that we all need to hear.

His messages were always honest and deliberate. And he spoke about things that most people on television (and irl) don’t. At least not to children. “It’s not so easy to quiet a doubt,” or “solitude is different from loneliness, and it doesn’t have to be a lonely kind of thing.” By acknowledging suffering, he also acknowledged hopefulness. In the strangest way, he was relatable. His goodness and authenticity was inspiring. Because as he reminded us, kindness and thoughtfulness and growth aren't always easy. In fact most of the time they are hard. But that's

Mr. Rogers reminds us to be as we are, to try new things (even if we're not very good at 'em), to build people up and to be present in the moment as much as we can.

And a reminder to watch A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood if you need a pick me up.
“The way you would draw a tree is different from the way anyone else would draw a tree—and that’s the way it’s supposed to be!” - Fred Rogers

  • In college, I took a J-term class on how to score a film. (It's actually where I met my friend, and More Water subscriber, Meron.) Anyways, I had this dream that one day I might score films. And then I took that class and realized my dream was actually to be a music supervisor. That dream still lingers here and there, and mostly rises to the surface after I watch a show or movie where the accompanying music has been done impeccably well. It popped up recently as I rewatched Me, Earl and the Dying Girl. In the closing scene, the song "Remember Me As A Time Of Day" by Explosions in the Sky plays, and it's perfect [SPOILER HERE]. The song went on to inspire one of the questions in '21 questions' and my first zine
  • Another great soundtrack: When Harry met Sally
  • One thing I realized I miss about summer is fresh herbs, so I've been making a concerted effort to incorporate more herbs into winter recipes. I've been chopping lots of fresh parsley, green onions, basil, dill and thyme and keeping them in a bowl ready to throw on eggs, pasta, rice, etc. Would recommend. Also shoutout leeks – it took me a while to love you, but I've arrived.
  • Artists I've been enjoying: Ariel Lee, kightek, and basile
  • I've recently become obsessed with the show Deadliest Catch. Like, I've watched it here and there before, but now, I'm hooked. It's suspenseful in a way not many shows are. And I'm late to it, but now there's a spinoff in Hawaii – Deadliest Catch: Bloodline. Anyways, if you need mindless, entertaining television and want to appreciate crab legs a little more, ALL 17 seasons are on AppleTV.
  • Music has been a big part of what's been getting be through this pandemic. But for the most part, I've returned to old favorites and staples, and haven't been as on top of new music as I have in the past. I think part of that too is I haven't really learned to love the new direction of rap. (Maybe I never will?) However, one rapper who continually blows me away is Cordae. And his new album is no different. 'From a Birds Eye View' is a no skip project.

  • All these songs turn 25 this year.
  • Often, I feel like my best, most creative ideas come at night (or in the shower). Check out these bedtime rituals from artists that help inspire creativity and set them up for success the next day.
  • Daffy Duck as Andre3000 and other amusing cartoon/hip-hop mashups
  • Here's what a $500,000 home looks like in every state.
  • A couple of songs I've been listening to lately: "Hella Good" by No Doubt, MOUNT WESTMORE's (Snoop Dogg, E-40, Ice Cube, Too Short) "Big Subwoofer," and "Baby Blue" by Sun June.
